How do artists find more collectors?

Hello. My name is Ann Rea and I’m an artist just like you. I’m also the creator of the Making Art Making Money program. What I want to talk to you about today is why artists struggle to find more collectors.

What happens when you can’t find more collectors?

Ann Rea (00:16):
Now, if you’re struggling to find more collectors, you’re probably experiencing three key frustrations.

Wondering if your hard work will ever pay off?

Ann Rea (00:25):
Number one, you’re working your butt off, you’re pouring your heart out, and you’re developing beautiful pieces of art, but you don’t know who your collectors are. You don’t know if there’s ever going to be a payoff for all that effort.

You can’t deposit compliments into your checking account.

Ann Rea (00:42):
So if you’re struggling to find more collectors it’s because you don’t know your niche. And when you don’t know your niche, what happens is you wind up guessing and you wind up taking a ton of time and energy talking to people who are never going to buy your art. They might give you a lot of compliments, but you can’t deposit those compliments into your checking account.

Hoping versus planning to sell your art.

Ann Rea (01:07):
The third frustration you’ll experience if you don’t know your niche is you’re going wind up hoping to sell your, instead of planning to sell your art. So you put all this love and effort and energy into developing your art and maybe showing your art and having a show, and then you’re just hoping you’re just hoping instead of planning to sell it. That’s frustrating. It’s a lot of risk. It’s a lot of expense.

You start to doubt yourself as an artist.

Ann Rea (01:38):
So the fear for a lot of artists who don’t really know their niche is they start to wonder, well, is it me? Is it, is it me and am I not good enough? Is my art not good enough? But yet it’s a little bit confusing because you see, let’s face it, some shit art that seems to be selling. So what’s happening? What’s the difference? One artist knows their niche. One artist doesn’t know their niche.

What’s a niche?

Ann Rea (02:07):
So what the heck does that mean? Niche? What does that word mean? Well, let me explain. First of all, let me explain what it doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean your creative medium. It doesn’t mean your genre. It doesn’t mean anything about your unique creative process. Doesn’t mean any of that. It’s about the people who want to buy your art. That’s what it means. So knowing your niche means you understand with certainty. Three things. First of all, you know who wants to buy your art? What type of people want to buy your art? Secondly, you know why they want to buy your art. And third, you know where to go find more people who are just like them. And that’s who you focus on and you don’t worry about anybody else. So let me offer you an analogy, right? The people who shop at Walmart are different from people who shop at, let’s say Bloomingdale’s.

Ann Rea (03:05):
Bloomingdale’s is not concerned about what the people who shop at Walmart think about their merchandise. They don’t care. They’re focused on their niche, their target market, right? So what winds up happening is if you don’t know your niche, you wind up being concerned about what anyone and everyone thinks. And it really doesn’t matter. I don’t know what prompted you to watch this video, but if you’ve got this far, you’re probably curious about learning more about how to find your niche.

I’m looking for 10 Case Studies.

Ann Rea (03:38):
So next month I am going to be taking 10 artists and they’re going to be case studies in the Making Art Making Money program. The whole goal of the Making Art Making Money program is to help you find your niche. In fact, during the final project, which is called a prototype project, that’s where my students find their niche and during that final project, they have to earn back their tuition investment through the sale of their art at a minimum in order to officially graduate.

Apply Now.

Ann Rea (04:08):
Now if that’s something of interest to you then I invite you to apply. You just fill out a quick application form and if your application indicates that I might be able to help you, we’ll hop on a quick call. And if your application indicates that doesn’t look like it can help you, I’m still going help you. I’m going to offer you some free valuable resources either way. So apply now. You’ve got nothing to lose.

  1. Hi
Watched your video – very enjoyable – Am curious as my artwork falls into very separate camps….. As you will see on my site under the ‘Projects’ menu: ‘LAMPEDUSA’ – ‘BUCHENWALD 317′ – MIGRANTS 1783’ – Is all quite political and veers into street art so frankly although I have sold a couple of pieces privately, they are not going to fly off the shelf, but I am in discussion with Amnesty International about them possibly showcasing them on their site with any money accrued going to fund AI projects.
Having said that, I feel that some of the work on my site in the link below could sell albeit in the right niche market.

  3. Hi Ann: I have been thinking about your course for a long time, and often following your social media, and think it may be a valuable tool for me…. But for some reason I feel “afraid” of jumping in, of also being on camera, “exposed” of failure. You see, I can’t stop creating, its in me. I think I try doing it as professionally as I can afford, yet I do not know my “Niche”. Before anything, do you do on line one on one sessions, how much are they, and what possibility is there to do one, before anything.

    1. Hello Randal, Are you ready to come off of the sidelines just watching?

No one fails. We learn. And my students only come on camera if they want to.

If so, I invite you to apply to enroll.
