The Law of Attraction Alone Isn't Going to Sell Your Art

Hello everyone. It’s Ann Rea, coming to you live from San Francisco, California. I am a fine artist. I am the creator of the Making Art Making Money program. And I just wanted to give a really brief talk about something that irks me, which is this really destructive. Ironically, it’s a very destructive notion that you can somehow sell your art if you just focus all of your positive energy, and you use the law of attraction or Abraham Hicks. Look, all those things are wonderful and they’re part of the equation, but they are far from the full picture of the things that you need in order to succeed in selling your art. A lot of artists are attracted to this, and I understand. As a matter of fact, you know when the movie, “The Secret” was a big hit, which is essentially just a repackaging of a lot of ancient wisdom,

Ann Rea: (00:55)
very, very skillfully repackaged, I will say. And you’ll remember the host of “The Secret” was Bob Proctor. I actually know Bob Proctor and I actually was flown to Toronto to paint his garden for his then 70th birthday party surprise. And it was a wonderful meeting and it was wonderful getting to know him. And he is amazing. As a matter of fact, he was coaching Ellen Degeneres at the time on the phone while I was there to beat Oprah Winfrey’s ratings, which of course she did. But that, you know, wasn’t all that had to be done, right? It wasn’t just reading “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill, right? It’s just– it’s just not. And so, I really am very concerned that artists think, well, if they get a creativity coach or a life coach– look all that stuff’s great.

But if they have never, number one, made art and successfully sold it, then they’re only going to be limited in what they can offer you. You have to think of it this way, this is about 80% psychology and 20% strategy. So the Law of Attraction or praying or whatever helps you get your head in the game, that’s 80% of it. No doubt. As success truly is an inside game. But if you don’t have the 20% strategy, if you don’t have a roadmap, if you don’t have a goal and a plan to achieve it, you’re kind of hosed. So I know a lot of artists have come to me in the Making Art Making Money program having spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on life coaching, and creativity coaching, and you freaking name it. And they’re just so disappointed that they haven’t made it to where they want to go.

Ann Rea: (02:53)
Now again, I’m not saying it’s black and white. You actually do need both, about 80% is psychology, and 20% is strategy. As a matter of fact, in my program, the Making Art Making Money program, I’ve partnered with a good friend of mine, Dr. George Pratt, who is a noted performance psychologist who’s helped a lot of very famous people you’ve heard of. So it’s not one of the other. You need both. But if you don’t have both, not good. So before I sign off, I just wanted to invite you to a free five-day challenge, which is going to be live. And it’s going to be happening on Tuesday, October 5th, until Saturday, October 9th. It’s going to happen at noon Pacific Standard Time. It’s going to go for a half an hour each day. And if you can’t make it, don’t sweat it. You can always go ahead and register.

Ann Rea: (03:43)
You can watch the replay, and you can join our Facebook group so that you can do things at your own pace. We’re also going to give you some homework assignments, very actionable, very practical homework assignments that are going to take you no more than 10 minutes each. And the whole goal is that you find your next collector and you do it quickly. So, go ahead and join us. There’s a link in the comment section to join the five-day challenge. And what I’d really recommend is that you think of one or two other artists who are just like you, you get along with obviously, invite them to join you, because if you’ve got someone to partner with and to hold you accountable, and get enthusiastic with, it’s going to help you complete the challenge. And ultimately we want you to get to that goal where you find your next collector, and you do it with a lot more ease than you’ve been told. All right, then. So I just wanted to give my 2 cents about the law of attraction and Abraham Hicks and all those goodies. They’re all good, but they’re not good by just by themselves. You need more than that. If you want to sell your art, you need a plan because a plan to sell your art without a plan. Well, it’s planning to sell no work.
